Jaishankar, Rubio Discuss U.S.-India Strategic Partnership in New York
United Nations — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on Wednesday to discuss strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the United States.
“Great to meet with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in New York today,” Rubio wrote on X.
“Together, we are building on the US-India strategic partnership and coordinating on key regional priorities and upcoming multilateral efforts,” he added.
Jaishankar said on X that during the meeting he “reiterated India’s interests and concerns with regard to SRIA,” referring to the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.
The two officials also “discussed the Gulf and Ukraine situations,” Jaishankar said.
Jaishankar is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday during the afternoon session beginning at 3 p.m. local time, or 12:30 a.m. Sunday in India.
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
The meeting with Rubio was among a series of high-level discussions Jaishankar has held on the sidelines of the General Assembly’s high-level week, where world leaders and senior diplomats have gathered in New York.
India-U.S. relations have faced pressure over recent U.S. legislation allowing tariffs of up to 100 percent on buyers of Russian oil, although the measure has not yet been enforced. Trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi also remain inconclusive.
At the same time, cooperation between the two countries has continued in other areas. India and the United States are members of the Quad alongside Japan and Australia and have worked together on security issues in the Indo-Pacific.
At a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi in May, the four countries reiterated cooperation on maritime security, port infrastructure and energy amid concerns about China’s growing influence in the region. (Source: IANS)
