Jaishankar, Rubio discuss Middle East tensions, focus on energy security

WASHINGTON — India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation Monday to discuss escalating tensions in West Asia and their impact on the global economy and energy markets.
“Had a detailed telecon this evening with US @SecRubio,” Jaishankar said in a post on X, describing it as their first call since the outbreak of the Iran conflict.
He said the discussions “focused on the West Asia conflict and its impact on the international economy,” with particular attention to energy security concerns.
Jaishankar added that both sides “agreed to remain in touch.”
In a separate readout, the U.S. State Department said the two officials reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation.
“Secretary Rubio spoke today with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar,” Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.
“The two officials discussed the current situation in the Middle East,” he said.
“The Secretary and Minister agreed on the importance of continuing to work together to advance mutual priorities,” Pigott added.
The call comes as tensions in West Asia continue to rise, putting pressure on global markets and keeping energy prices volatile.
India and the United States have significantly expanded their strategic partnership in recent years, with cooperation spanning defense, technology, and energy.
Stability in West Asia remains critical for both countries, given its influence on global trade flows, inflation, and energy supplies, making continued diplomatic engagement a priority. (Source: IANS)
