Colombo–In a strong show of solidarity, Sri Lankan Member of Parliament and noted economist Harsha de Silva has praised India’s “bold stand” against recent U.S. tariffs, urging fellow Sri Lankans to stand by New Delhi, which he called a “true ally” and a regional inspiration.
Addressing Parliament in Colombo, de Silva recalled India’s crucial support during Sri Lanka’s unprecedented economic crisis in 2022, cautioning against mocking India amid its current tensions with the United States.
“Don’t laugh at India. Don’t mock them when they are down—because when we were down, they were the only ones to lend us a hand,” de Silva said during a parliamentary session, as reported by the Daily Mirror.
The statement comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s August 6 announcement of an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, reportedly in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. India has called the move “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
De Silva criticized what he described as Trump’s “selective and unfair” trade practices, and emphasized that India’s resilience in the face of global pressure sends a powerful message across Asia.
He also shared a clip of his remarks on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Called out the Govt in Sri Lankan Parliament for mocking India’s bold stand against Trump’s trade tariffs. India, our true ally, stood by us in our toughest times. We should honour their fight, not laugh. India’s courage inspires Asia.”
Deep-Rooted Ties
India and Sri Lanka share centuries of civilizational, cultural, and economic connections, which have only deepened in recent decades. The bilateral relationship is a cornerstone of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and has been marked by mutual trust and timely cooperation.
Earlier this year, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted India’s role in stabilizing Sri Lanka’s economy, noting that New Delhi acted as a “dependable neighbour” and first responder during the crisis.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath also lauded India’s unwavering support, stating in February that India extended nearly $4 billion in assistance in 2022, including being the first country to offer financial assurances to the IMF, which were crucial for Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring and recovery.
“Without this support, Sri Lanka’s recovery would not have been as swift,” Herath posted on X.
As New Delhi faces global headwinds, including increased economic pressure from the United States, voices like de Silva’s highlight the regional significance of India’s leadership — and the deep appreciation among its neighbours for its role in times of crisis. (Source: IANS)
