Indian Stock Markets Surge as Sensex Jumps 2,009 Points, Nifty Closes Above 24,500

MUMBAI–Indian stock markets recorded one of their strongest rallies in recent months on Thursday, with the benchmark Sensex surging more than 2,000 points and the Nifty closing above 24,500 as falling crude oil prices and hopes for an easing of tensions in West Asia lifted investor confidence.
The rally extended Indian equities’ winning streak to five consecutive trading sessions, fueled by improving market sentiment following the Democratic Party’s victory in the U.S. midterm elections and expectations that the political developments could accelerate efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 2,008.61 points, or 2.6 percent, to close at 79,310.01.
The broader NSE Nifty 50 gained 576 points, or 2.4 percent, ending the session at 24,536.60.
The sharp gains significantly increased the value of Indian equities, with the combined market capitalization of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange rising by approximately Rs 7.03 trillion.
Total market capitalization climbed to Rs 501.45 trillion from Rs 494.42 trillion in the previous trading session, reflecting the substantial increase in investor wealth.
Market analysts attributed the rally primarily to declining global crude oil prices, which helped ease concerns about inflation, corporate profitability and India’s energy import costs.
As one of the world’s largest oil-importing countries, India is particularly sensitive to fluctuations in global energy prices. Lower crude oil prices can reduce the country’s import bill, ease inflationary pressures and improve profit margins for businesses that depend heavily on fuel and transportation.
Investor optimism was also supported by expectations that the outcome of the U.S. midterm elections could create political momentum toward reducing tensions in West Asia.
The positive sentiment extended beyond large-cap companies, although gains were more moderate among smaller stocks.
The Nifty MidCap 100 index advanced 1.87 percent, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 gained 0.56 percent, indicating broader participation in the market’s upward movement.
Automobile, real estate and financial services stocks were among the strongest performers during the session.
The Nifty Auto, Nifty Realty, Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Private Bank indices led sectoral gains as investors increased their exposure to industries that could benefit from improving economic conditions and lower borrowing costs.
However, the rally was not uniform across all sectors.
Chemical and media stocks underperformed the broader market, while several prominent companies finished the session in negative territory.
Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the biggest losers in the Nifty 50 despite the benchmark index’s strong advance.
Technical analysts said the Nifty’s move above important moving averages strengthened the market’s near-term outlook and suggested a possible reversal toward a more sustained upward trend.
“Any dip towards 24,200 could act as immediate support, while 24,000 remains crucial positional support. On the upside, resistance is placed at 24,800 and 25,000. A buy-on-dips strategy remains advisable,” market experts stated.
Analysts said the index’s ability to hold above key support levels would be important in determining whether the current rally could continue.
They also pointed to improving corporate earnings expectations, bond yields and foreign investment flows as factors contributing to the market’s renewed momentum.
Nevertheless, market observers cautioned that the sustainability of the rally would depend on continued participation across sectors and meaningful progress toward reducing geopolitical tensions.
“For now, the stars appear aligned, with crude, yields, earnings and foreign flows all turning in the market’s favour, keeping the near-term bias constructive. Yet the rally’s staying power will ultimately depend on whether breadth remains strong and whether the hope of de-escalation translates into concrete progress on the ground,” market watchers noted.
Thursday’s gains provided a significant boost to Indian equity markets as investors weighed improving domestic economic conditions against continuing geopolitical uncertainty.
While the decline in crude oil prices offered immediate relief to inflation-sensitive industries, analysts said future market performance would depend on global developments, corporate earnings and whether expectations of reduced tensions in West Asia translate into lasting stability.
