New Delhi– National Award-winning director T. S. Nagabharana, who is also the Indian Jury Chairperson for the 1st BRICS Film Festival here, says Indian cinema should not only be defined by the work of Bollywood.
He added that regional cinema is “more artistic and informed”.
“Indian movies are more than just Bollywood movies. There are other languages also which are more artistic and more informed so those movies should also get into such milieu,” Nagabharana told IANS in an email interview.
Nagabharana, who works in Kannada film industry, has nine National Awards and 14 State Awards to his credit. He is known for films like “Grahana”, “Banker Margayya”, ” Santha Shishunala Sharifa”, and ” Kallarali Hoovagi”.
He points out that “today film market generally works for commercial films, very rarely it works for parallel cinema”.
Talking about the maiden edition of BRICS Film Festival – which was held here from September 2 to 6, the director shared that the focus should not only be on entertainment.
“BRICS should have in mind that apart from entertainment, there is something experimenting that should also get marketed. The market should have sensible approach to reach these kind of films as well,” he said.
Nagabharana has some ideas for the next edition.
“Going forward we need to introduce few more awards, more marketing strategies and infrastructure. More than that somewhere there is a difference between film making and marketing. BRICS countries should concentrate especially to support each other in these two areas and the future is bright,” he said.
The festival was a part of the special events planned in the run-up to the 8th BRICS Summit to be held in India.(IANS)
