Indian Americans top U.S. income rankings among major ethnic groups, report finds

NEW DELHI — Indian American households have the highest median income among major ethnic groups in the United States, earning far above the national average, according to a new report citing data from the Pew Research Center.
The report, published by The Australia Today, found that Indian American households report a median annual income of about $151,200, compared with roughly $83,700 for the overall U.S. population — a gap of nearly $67,000, or about 80 percent higher than the national median.
Despite making up only about 1.4 percent of the U.S. population — approximately 4.8 million people — Indian Americans have an outsized economic impact, driven largely by strong participation in professional, technical, and specialized fields.
“Even among other high-earning Asian communities, Indian Americans maintain a clear lead,” the report noted.
Among other groups, Taiwanese American households ranked second with a median income of about $133,300, roughly $17,900, or 13 to 14 percent, lower than Indian American households. The combined median income for all Asian American households stands at approximately $105,600, still significantly below that of Indian Americans.
The report also highlighted the group’s contribution to federal tax revenues, estimating that Indian American households account for about 6 percent of total taxes paid, reflecting their concentration in higher income brackets.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently pointed to the role of immigrants, particularly those of Indian origin, in driving innovation across industries in the United States. Addressing concerns about job competition, Musk said his companies often struggle to find highly skilled workers and rely on global talent to fill critical gaps.
The findings come as India and the United States continue discussions toward a potential bilateral trade agreement aimed at strengthening economic ties. (Source: IANS)
