CALIFORNIA– The Indian-American community across the United States has hailed California’s decision to officially recognize Diwali—the Festival of Lights—as a state holiday, marking a milestone moment for cultural inclusion and representation.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law on October 6, making California the third state in the nation to designate Diwali as a statewide holiday, following Pennsylvania in 2024 and Connecticut earlier this year.

Extending greetings to all celebrating, the Indian Consulate General in San Francisco thanked the state for acknowledging the festival’s significance. “California now joins Pennsylvania and Connecticut in celebrating this festival that symbolizes light, hope, and unity—values cherished across communities,” the Consulate posted on X on Wednesday (Indian time).

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) expressed gratitude to Governor Newsom for recognizing the festival and called the move “a new era of inclusion” for Hindus in California. The group also thanked Assembly Members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra for sponsoring the bill and championing the effort in the state legislature.

The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) lauded the law as a milestone that integrates Diwali into California’s holiday season. “We are grateful to Assembly member Kalra and Assembly member Patel for their leadership on this initiative, as well as the overwhelming support from the community,” said HAF Managing Director Samir Kalra. He noted that the provisions allowing students to take the day off without penalty and granting paid leave to state employees were “important leaps forward in making Diwali truly accessible to those who celebrate.”

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA) also praised California’s decision, calling it “a proud and historic milestone for Hindu Americans.” In a statement on X, the organization said, “We thank Governor Gavin Newsom and the California State Assembly for recognizing Diwali as part of the state’s civic and cultural calendar. Diwali—the festival of light, knowledge, and renewal—speaks to values cherished by all communities. Its inclusion in California’s official calendar reflects how these timeless ideals contribute to the state’s vibrant and diverse spirit.”

VHPA added that California’s move illustrates how “cultural awareness meeting civic engagement enriches everyone,” encouraging other states to follow suit. “Festivals like Diwali are not only sacred to millions of Hindu Americans but also express universal values: light overcoming darkness, wisdom guiding action, and renewal inspiring hope,” the group said.
