India Wins Women’s Hockey Gold After 44 Years, Secures 2028 Olympics Berth

Kakamigahara, Japan – India ended a 44-year wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal with a 1-0 victory over defending champion China in the final of the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Friday, securing direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Lalremsiami scored the winning goal in the 10th minute as India held off sustained pressure from China to claim its first women’s hockey gold medal at the Asian Games since 1982.
The decisive goal came from a coordinated attacking move initiated by Salima Tete, who delivered a precise pass into the circle. Sakshi then set up Lalremsiami, whose powerful reverse-hit shot flew into the roof of the net.
China responded by taking control of possession and launching repeated attacks, but India’s defense remained resolute. Navneet Kaur made a crucial goal-line clearance from a penalty corner, while goalkeeper Savita Punia produced an outstanding one-handed save to deny China a penalty stroke.
India maintained its narrow lead through halftime despite mounting pressure from the defending champions. China continued to attack in the third quarter, earning several penalty corners, but India’s defenders repeatedly blocked their attempts.
In the closing minutes, China withdrew its goalkeeper to introduce an additional outfield player in a final attempt to equalize. India maintained its defensive discipline and controlled possession to preserve the victory.
The triumph marked India’s second Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal and its first since the sport made its debut at the continental competition in New Delhi in 1982. India had previously reached the finals in 1998 and 2018 but settled for silver on both occasions.
India remained unbeaten throughout this year’s tournament, winning all four of its Pool A matches, including a 7-1 victory over Pakistan. The team advanced to the final with a commanding 7-2 semifinal win over Japan.
The gold medal also earned India direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, capping a tournament campaign marked by strong attacking performances and resilient defense. (Source: IANS)
