India Society of Worcester to Break Ground for Expansion of India Center on Oct. 5

WORCESTER, MA—India Society of Worcester, one of the oldest Indian American organizations that also built the region’s first and the only Indian Center, will break ground to expand its existing facility by 4,000 square feet.

ISW had launched it’s a fundraising campaign to expand the facility only late last year to accommodate growing demand for its services in the area.

“It is my privilege to write this email to tell you about an important milestone our community,” ISW President Ashish Cowlagi told ISW members in an email invite. “After many months of hard work by a large group of volunteers, we are excited to announce plans for the groundbreaking ceremony- Bhoomi Poojan – for the construction.”

New India Center groundbreaking ceremony, or “Bhoomi Poojan” will be held at 11:00 am on Oct. 5 at the India Center, followed by lunch. ISW India Center is located at 152 Main Street in Shrewsbury, MA.

With this planned expansion, India Center will be a community center –  a hub where the Indian American community congregates, and a foundation for India Society’s community engagement efforts for the community at large.

ISW envisions multiple activities with diverse age groups, both scheduled and spontaneous take place at the same time, giving the community the ability to strengthen its network.

The new center will allow ISW to grow its the reach to its already vibrant programs including –

  • India Youth Group – our unique youth and personality development program,
  • ISW Language and Cultural School teaching 5 languages ,
  • Free Health stop which offers health care to the uninsured and under insured across the greater Worcester area
  • Humrahee – our Seniors networking program
  • Professional Development and Career assistance
  • Physical and emotional wellness.

According to an article in INDIA New England News late last year, the estimated cost of the expansion, which will double the size of the facility to 8,000 square feet, is about $1.4 million.
