NEW DELHI– India has formally raised concerns with Irish authorities in Dublin and the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi over recent incidents of violence targeting Indian nationals. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Indian Embassy in Dublin is in direct contact with victims and community members, offering all possible assistance.

Addressing reporters at a regular media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “There have been several cases of violence against Indian nationals in Ireland, as reported in the media. We have strongly raised this matter with the Irish authorities in Dublin as well as with the Embassy here. We note that both the President of Ireland and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister have publicly condemned these deplorable acts of violence. Our Embassy in Dublin is in touch with the victims and our community members, extending all possible support. We have issued an advisory for Indian nationals in Ireland, and we hope the situation will improve.”

On the situation in Canada — including a recent harassment case involving an Indian couple — Jaiswal said India takes the safety of its citizens abroad “very seriously” and engages with local law enforcement whenever security concerns arise. “Our mission and consulates are in close touch with the community. Whenever an issue needs to be flagged, we bring it to the attention of the authorities for appropriate action,” he added.

Earlier this week, Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris met with representatives of the Indian community in Dublin and denounced the “despicable acts of violence and racism” against them in recent weeks. He also praised the community’s “positive contribution” to the country. His remarks came after a violent assault on an Indian national in Tallaght, a southwestern suburb of Dublin, on July 26. The Indian Embassy in Ireland confirmed it has been assisting the victim and his family.

The Embassy recently issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to take precautions, avoid deserted areas, and exercise caution, especially during late hours.

In Canada, a viral video showed a group of young men hurling racial slurs and threats at an Indian couple in the parking lot of Lansdowne Place Mall in Peterborough, Ontario, on July 29. The Peterborough Police Service confirmed the incident and said one individual has been arrested. “On Friday, August 8, 2025, officers began an investigation into the July 29 incident. The investigation included reviewing videos, some of which contained hate-based language,” police said in a statement. (Source: IANS)
