NEW DELHI– OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Thursday that India is now the company’s second-largest market globally and “may become our largest” in the future.

Speaking on the WTF podcast with Indian entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, Altman described the capabilities of GPT-5, calling it “like having PhD-level experts in every field available to you 24/7, not only to ask anything but also to do anything for you — write code, generate research, plan an event.”

He noted that the model can support nearly every function of an early-stage business, from building software and handling customer support to writing marketing plans, drafting communications, and reviewing legal documents.

Altman said this is an ideal time to start a career, particularly for young Indians, given the potential of AI tools like GPT-5 to enhance skills and productivity. He praised India’s enthusiasm for AI, describing the country as one of the most eager to embrace the technology. “If there is one large society in the world that seems most enthusiastic to transform with AI right now, it’s India. The excitement, the embrace of AI…the energy is incredible,” he said.

He emphasized that GPT-5 marks a significant leap in human-AI interaction, enabling not just answers but execution across personal, creative, and professional applications. Feedback from Indian users — especially on language support, affordability, and access — has directly influenced OpenAI’s product development, he added.

Altman also highlighted the opportunity for India to move from being a major consumer of AI to becoming a global creator of tools, platforms, and companies used worldwide.

GPT-5 is available to all users, with Plus subscribers receiving more usage and Pro subscribers getting access to GPT-5 Pro, which offers extended reasoning for more comprehensive and accurate responses. (Source: IANS)
