Woman gang-raped in West Bengal

Kolkata– A woman was allegedly gang-raped brutally in a secluded area in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, police said on Sunday.

“The homemaker of Madhyapara area was alone when two persons, Parimal Rai and Ratnu Munda, took her away and raped her on Saturday night. Today we received a complaint and based on the victim’s statement we arrested both of them,” a police officer of Dhupguri police station said.

The woman in her late twenties was admitted to the local hospital with severe injuries.

The police officer said there are reports that the victims was subjected to severe atrocities. “The investigation is going on,” he added.

Man held for killing wife over her alleged affair

New Delhi–A man was on Sunday arrested on the charge of killing his wife, police said.

Kamil suspected Reshma, 22, to be in an extra-marital affair, and strangled her to death after an argument.

Kamil, a resident of central Delhi’s Kamla Market, walked into the police station and informed the officers that he had killed his wife after a fight.

“A police team visited Kamil’s residence and found the body of her wife, identified as Reshma, 22, lying on the mattress. Her face had turned bluish. Kamil was later arrested,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Mandeep Singh Randhawa said.

During interrogation, he revealed that he suspected Reshma’s character and thought she was involved in an extra-marital affair. Kamil used to have frequent fights with Reshma over the issue, the police officer said.

“Following an argument between the husband and the wife on Saturday, Kamil strangled her to death.

He was, however, filled with remorse after Reshma had died, the officer added.

Labourer dies inside Delhi Jal Board pump house

New Delhi–A labourer died while working in a Delhi Jal Board water pump house in north Delhi, police said on Sunday.

“An information was received at the Jahangirpuri police station from a private hospital that a labourer, later identified as Doomay Ray,32, was brought dead from a Delhi Jal Board Pump House in Jahangirpuri,” Deputy Commissioner of Police A.K. Lall said.

“During investigation, it was found that Doomay was working in the Delhi Jal Board Pump house with three others. He died due to drowning,” Lall said.

The Delhi Jal Board has given contract to KK Spun India Limited for repair and rehabilitation of sewerage in Jahangirpuri, Lall said.

Around 5.30 a.m. on Sunday, Doomay entered the underground unit of the pump house to open a valve. He drowned after a sudden gush of water.

A case has been registered against the company under relevant sections, including under the Prohibition of Employment As Manual Scavengers And Their Rehabilitation Act.

Further investigation is underway.

Anu Malik no longer part of ‘Indian Idol’

Mumbai–Singer Anu Malik, who has been accused of sexual misconduct, was no longer part of the jury panel of the singing-based reality show “Indian Idol” season 10, according to an official statement on Sunday.

The statement from Sony Entertainment Television channel said: “Anu Malik is no longer a part of the ‘Indian Idol’ jury panel. The show will continue its planned schedule and we will invite some of the biggest names in Indian music as guests to join Vishal Dadlani and Neha Kakkar to judge the extraordinary talent of ‘Indian Idol’ season 10.”

He has been accused by singers Sona Mohapatra and Shweta Pandit, who called him a “paedophile” and a “sexual predator”.

Malik has denied the allegations that he sexually harassed Shweta.

“The allegations made against my client are emphatically denied as completely false and baseless. My client respects the #MeToo movement, but to use this movement to start a character assassination mission is obnoxious,” Malik’s lawyer Zulfiquar Memon had told IANS.
