London– India has formally submitted a proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, positioning the city as the venue for the centenary edition of the event.

An Indian delegation, including representatives from the Commonwealth Games Association of India and the Government of Gujarat, presented the bid to Commonwealth Sport in London. The team was led by Harsh Sanghavi, Gujarat’s Minister of Sports, after the Union Cabinet approved the proposal.

The bid reflects India’s commitment to staging a Games that is sustainable, inclusive, and aligned with the Commonwealth’s “Games Reset” principles.

Sanghavi said the centenary Games would carry historic significance for both India and the Commonwealth. “The event will mark a century of sporting excellence, unity, and shared values. Our Games will be guided by the ancient principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ — the world is one family. And in keeping with Atithi Devo Bhava, or ‘the guest is divine,’ India will extend warmth and hospitality to all who attend.”

Indian Olympic Association and Commonwealth Games Association (India) President PT Usha said the bid represents national aspirations. “The Commonwealth Games in Amdavad will showcase not just India’s sporting capabilities but also the values of friendship, respect, and inclusivity that define our sporting culture. As we celebrate the centenary edition, India stands ready to welcome the Commonwealth family with warmth and excellence, inspiring a new generation to dream and achieve through sport,” she said.

Ahmedabad, officials noted, offers a compact and modern Games footprint with international-standard venues, strong transport networks, and high-quality accommodations designed to ensure efficiency, accessibility, and a seamless experience for athletes, officials, and fans.

The date of the submission, August 29, also carried symbolism as it coincided with National Sports Day in India, commemorating hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

The bid underscores India’s growing role as a global sporting hub and is part of its long-term ambition to host major international events. It also has strong government backing and governance guarantees, aligning with the country’s broader sporting goals.

If approved, the 2030 Games would return to India after two decades. New Delhi hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, when India achieved its best-ever medal tally, finishing second behind Australia. Despite infrastructure controversies, the event was widely praised for its sporting performances. (Source: IANS)
