India and Canada Hold First Migration and Mobility Dialogue to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

New Delhi — India and Canada held their inaugural Migration and Mobility Dialogue on Monday, exploring opportunities to facilitate cross-border mobility and improve migration management as the two countries work to strengthen bilateral relations.

The talks were co-chaired by Sripriya Ranganathan, Secretary (Consular, Passport, Visa and Overseas Indian Affairs) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Ted Gallivan, Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The MEA said the discussions focused on developing pathways for mobility and strengthening migration management, areas that could play an important role in the future growth of India-Canada relations.

“Both sides discussed enabling pathways for mobility and migration management which could be a key driver for the future growth of India-Canada ties,” the ministry said in a post on X.

The dialogue follows a series of high-level diplomatic engagements aimed at expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier this month, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited New Delhi, where she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on strengthening economic and strategic ties.

During her visit, Anand emphasized the potential for closer cooperation in trade, investment and security amid growing global economic uncertainty.

“Canada and India have enormous potential to shape a more prosperous future, together. I had the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today to discuss our strategic partnership and the opportunities ahead for trade, investment and security,” Anand said following her meeting with Modi.

She also highlighted the longstanding connections between the two countries, particularly through families, students and entrepreneurs.

“Nearly 80 years of diplomatic ties have been enriched by generations of families, students and entrepreneurs who have brought our countries closer. We look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi to Canada this December,” she said.

Modi described his meeting with Anand as productive, noting that the discussions covered trade, technology, security, energy, education and people-to-people exchanges.

“India is committed to building a constructive and forward-looking strategic partnership with Canada that delivers tangible benefits to the people of both countries,” Modi said.

Jaishankar also highlighted progress in several areas of bilateral cooperation, including investment, education, energy, defense and people-to-people exchanges.

Anand’s visit marked her third trip to India since June 2025, reflecting continued diplomatic engagement between the two governments.

The launch of the Migration and Mobility Dialogue represents another step in efforts to expand cooperation, particularly in areas involving students, professionals and other travelers moving between India and Canada. (Source: IANS)
