WALTHAM, MA—The 40-year-old Gujarati Association of New England, popularly known as Gurjar,  will receive the best non-profit organization award at New England Choice Awards gala on Oct. 27 at Westin Hotel in Waltham, MA. The organization serves more than 10,000 Gujarati speaking families in New England.

Founded in 1977, Gurjar this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a series of events. It organizes year-round, educational and entertaining cultural events such Youth Program, Diwali, Navratri,  Spring/Summer Mela, Scholarship, Charity fund-raising, grand-parents club, Drama, Musical concerts, and Poetry recitals.

Last month, Gurjar organized first-ever cultural festival held at the Heritage Park on Pawtucket Boulevard in Lowell, MA. Some said that this open-door festival and venue has potential to become an annual celebration like India Day at Boston’s Hatch Memorial Shell along the Charles River.

Gurjar officials said the event was a tremendous success as approximately 4,000 people attended the festivities and enjoyed the delicacies from various food vendors.

“I hope you make this an annual event, and next year if you need any help please call my office and we will facilitate getting all the necessary permits. We want to make this happen for you, every year,” Lowell Mayor Edward J.  Kennedy said addressing the crowd with great enthusiasm.
