MUMBAI– Five members of a migrant laborer family, including two children, were killed by electrocution on Wednesday after coming into contact with high-voltage wires illegally laid in a farm field in Jalgaon district’s Erandol taluka, officials said.
The victims were identified as Vikas Ramlal Pavra, his wife Suman, their sons Pawan and Kawal, and Pavra’s mother-in-law. The couple’s one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Durga, miraculously survived. The family hailed from Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh and had been working as farm laborers in Ambe Vadgaon village of Pachora taluka.
Police said the family had gone to a field near Khedi village in search of work when they came in contact with live electric wires that the farm owner had installed to keep wild animals away. Investigators confirmed that two wild boars had previously died in the same field after being electrocuted.
Authorities have taken the farm owner into custody and are registering a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police seized the wires and cables from the field, which will be used as evidence in court.
The incident has triggered anger in the region, with villagers demanding strict action against those endangering lives by setting up illegal electric traps in farmland. Police said while the workers may have been aware of the wires, the exact circumstances of how they came into contact with them remain under investigation. (Source: IANS)
