Washington–As Diwali, the Festival of Lights, illuminated homes and hearts around the world, prominent U.S. leaders — including Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel and several lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle — extended warm wishes to millions celebrating the festival globally.

FBI Director Kash Patel, the first Indian-American to head the federal investigative agency, posted a Diwali message on Monday, calling the festival a powerful symbol of the victory of good over evil.

“Happy Diwali – celebrating the Festival of Lights around the world, as good triumphs over evil. A very Happy Diwali to all,” Patel wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Patel, whose appointment earlier this year was a milestone for the Indian-American community, took his oath of office with his hand on the Bhagavad Gita, a gesture that highlighted the growing diversity and inclusion within the highest levels of the U.S. government.

In his message, Patel recognized Diwali’s significance for Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, noting that the celebration of light over darkness resonates far beyond religious boundaries and is embraced by millions in the United States and around the world.

Joining Patel in the festive spirit, Ohio gubernatorial candidate and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy also took to X to wish his followers:

“Happy Diwali! May the light prevail over darkness.”

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott hosted a Diwali celebration at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin, attended by Indian Consul General DC Manjunath and members of the Indian-American community.

The Consulate General of India in Houston shared photos from the event on X, writing:

“Diwali 2025 celebrations at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin, Texas! Heartfelt thanks to Governor @GregAbbott_TX for continuing this beautiful tradition of celebrating Diwali with the Indo-American community, spreading the spirit of light, unity, and togetherness.”

Across party lines, Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna and Republican Congressman Pete Sessions conveyed their Diwali greetings, underscoring the growing bipartisan recognition of the festival. Other lawmakers, including Republican Brian Fitzpatrick and Democrat Suzan DelBene, joined local community events to mark the occasion.

The increasing visibility of Diwali celebrations in American political and public life reflects the influence and vibrancy of the Indian diaspora, as well as a broader embrace of cultural diversity across the country.

As lamps were lit and sweets shared across cities from New York to San Francisco, the messages from U.S. leaders echoed a common sentiment — a celebration of light, unity, and hope in challenging times. (Source: IANS)
