Elephant Kills Man in Ranchi Residential Area, Sparks Panic Among Residents

RANCHI — A man was killed Monday after a wild elephant wandered into a residential area on the outskirts of Ranchi, triggering panic among local residents and renewing concerns about rising human-elephant conflict in Jharkhand.
The incident occurred in Pali village under the Ratu police station limits, where the elephant attacked and fatally injured Subodh Khalkho.
Villagers said the animal was first spotted early in the morning near Chittarkota Patra village before moving toward Pali. Both areas are densely populated.
This is the second such incident in four days in which an elephant has entered residential neighborhoods in the state capital.
According to residents, the same elephant had strayed into the Ranchi-Hatia area last Friday and roamed through streets and housing colonies for nearly four hours before retreating.
Forest Department officials said the elephant’s movement is being closely monitored. Teams have been deployed in affected areas, and efforts are underway to safely guide the animal back into forested terrain.
Authorities have advised villagers to remain indoors, ensure the safety of children and elderly family members, and maintain a safe distance from the animal. Residents have also been warned not to chase or provoke the elephant.
Incidents of wild elephants entering Ranchi and adjoining areas have been reported repeatedly in recent years, underscoring the growing challenge of human-elephant conflict in the state.
In June 2024, an elephant was spotted near the Jharkhand Assembly complex in Kute on the city’s outskirts. Earlier, two elephants entered an abandoned cold storage facility in the Ratu area. In January 2013, an elephant strayed into the Deepatoli Army Cantonment, causing widespread alarm.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has expressed concern over the increasing frequency of such incidents. He recently chaired a review meeting with Forest Department officials and directed them to develop long-term strategies to prevent elephants from entering residential zones.
According to official estimates, 27 people have been killed in elephant attacks across various districts of Jharkhand in recent months. (Source: IANS)
