FRAMINGHAM, MA– Dhruba Sen, a long-time resident of Framingham, MA, is running for the town’s mayor, saying that he want to make Framingham a smart city.

“I have been living in Framingham for more than a quarter century and want to transform Framingham to a Smart City,” Sen told INDIA New England News.

Sen, who was elected to Town Meeting member of Framingham in 2012, is a computer consultant in the business verticals of healthcare, pharma, finance, retail , automatic train control and functional domain of Process Improvement, application & database development, infrastructure, Big Data , Security and Analytics.

A certified software development professional from IEEE Computer Society, Sen has worked for TATA, GE, Price Waterhouse , Capital One, Bank of America and Staples, among others.

In an earlier interview, Sen had told INDIA New England News that he was first motivated to run in local elections because he wanted to  contribute to local governance and get the Indian voice heard.

His advice to Indian-Americans who want to get involved in politics: “Connect with your neighbors and get well versed with community issues. A Town Meeting Member represents not only his/her precinct but the entire town. When I first ran, I thought I will get only 2 votes but it turned out that I was the top vote getter.”

If Sen wins the Mayor’s race, he wants to convert Framingham into a Smart City, using his technical skills.

“A smart city is a vision to integrate Information and Communication Technology and Internet of Things to securely manage a city’s assets. This allows city officials to interact directly with the community and the city infrastructure and to monitor what is happening in the city, how the city is evolving, and how to enable a better quality of life,” says Sen in his campaign flyer. “More specifically, SmartCity model is used to enhance quality, performance and interactivity of urban services, to reduce costs and resource consumption and to improve contact between citizens and government. “

He says will implement technology solutions for a Framingham that is smart in finance, education, healthcare, environment, transportation, public safety & law enforcement, housing, and infrastructure.

Sen has a tough competition from a few other candidates.  To appear on the September ballot, each candidate had to collect 500 signatures from registered voters in Framingham and 25 signatures from registered voters must have been from each of the 9 districts in Framingham.

Other Mayoral candidates include Joshua Horrigan, Scott Liftman, Jim Rizoli, Priscila Sousa, Yvonne Spicer and John Stefanini.

There will be a preliminary election  for mayor on September 26 to narrow the candidates. The top two vote getters will appear on the November 7 ballot.
