New Delhi– India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed he is on the road to recovery following surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen. The procedure took place in Munich, Germany, after he spent time in Europe with his wife, Devisha, following the conclusion of the IPL and Mumbai T20 League.
“Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” Suryakumar wrote in an Instagram post.
This marks the second time the star batter has undergone surgery for a sports hernia. He previously had a similar operation in Munich on January 17, 2024, shortly after ankle surgery for an injury sustained during India’s tour of South Africa in December 2023.
Suryakumar last represented India in the five-match T20I series against England earlier this year, where the hosts triumphed 4–1. He then had a standout season in IPL 2025, scoring 717 runs in 16 innings for the Mumbai Indians and finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run-getter. Though MI did not lift the trophy, Suryakumar was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his record-breaking performance as a middle-order batter.
The 34-year-old is expected to begin his rehabilitation program in the coming weeks at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
It remains uncertain whether he will regain full fitness in time for India’s upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh in late August. The tour also includes three ODIs, a format in which Suryakumar has not featured since the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. (Source: IANS)
