Pratham Education Foundation CEO Rukmini Banerji was the keynote speaker at this year’s gala.

The annual Boston Gala provided an opportunity for the local community to learn about Pratham’s efforts to address a learning crisis that leaves nearly half of India’s fifth graders unable to read or write.

Avanti Nagral, who along with Sara Atske, Meredith Clark and Grace Weghorst researched, assessed and presented Pratham to their peers and earned a $15,000 grant from Harvard University for Pratham, also spoke at gala.

“Since its inception, Pratham has helped educate and transform the lives of over 50 million children and youth accross India,” Pratima Abichandani, president of the Pratham Boston Chapter, said in a letter to all attendees of the gala. “With your support, we raised over $300K at our gala, which will make it possible for thousands more to receive high quality education and career opportunities.

Established in the slums of Mumbai in 1995, Pratham is now one of India’s largest non-governmental education organizations, having affected the lives of more than 50 million underprivileged children in the past two decades. To achieve its mission of “every child in school and learning well,” Pratham develops practical solutions to address gaps in the education system and works in collaboration with India’s governments, communities, educators and industry to increase learning outcomes and influence education policy.
