MUMBAI– Saif Ali Khan is getting nostalgic as the 2005 hit Parineeta makes its grand re-release. The romantic drama, which marked Vidya Balan’s Bollywood debut, also starred Sanjay Dutt and remains one of Saif’s most cherished projects.
“There’s something about seeing a film like Parineeta on the big screen,” Saif said, calling it “one of the most beautifully shot films” of his career. He remembered late director Pradeep Sarkar with deep admiration, crediting him for crafting a lyrical, frame-perfect masterpiece.
On playing Shekhar, Saif said it was a refreshing challenge: “He wasn’t the usual romantic hero—he was flawed, difficult, and vulnerable. That gave me the chance to explore a more nuanced space as an actor.”
But it was his co-star Vidya Balan who stole the spotlight in his recollection. “Working with Vidya was amazing—she was extraordinary for her first film. She brought so much grace, poetry, and freshness. She was simply phenomenal,” Saif gushed.
Saif also praised the timeless music of the film, especially Sonu Nigam’s soulful performances and Shantanu Moitra’s compositions, which still echo two decades later. “Being in a kurta and dhoti, playing the guitar on the Hooghly River—that image will stay with me forever,” he said.
The restored version of Parineeta, adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1914 novel, has been remastered in 8K with 5.1 surround sound. It returns to theaters nationwide for a limited one-week run starting August 29, 2025.

“For my first book, I was given six months. I didn’t write for five, and then in the last month, I just flew with it and finished. I realized I function better with deadlines,” Divya told IANS.
