MUMBAI– Freida Pinto is heading back to the spotlight, this time as the lead in Netflix’s upcoming series Unaccustomed Earth, based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s acclaimed short story collection.
Pinto will take on the role of Parul Chaudhury in the eight-episode drama, which promises to deliver a mix of romance, scandal, and cultural complexity set within a tight-knit Indian American community in Cambridge.
Billed as “an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama,” the series follows a devoted wife whose rekindled romance with a long-lost love ignites a scandal, stirring tensions in a community already simmering with secrets.
Best known for her breakout performance in Slumdog Millionaire, Pinto has built an impressive resume with roles in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Knight of Cups, Hillbilly Elegy, and Mr. Malcolm’s List. On the small screen, she’s appeared in Guerilla, Surface, and The Path.
The series is being co-written by John Wells and Madhuri Shekar, with Nisha Ganatra—who originally optioned Lahiri’s book—on board as an executive producer. Lahiri herself will also executive produce, alongside a team including Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, and Celia Costas. The show is being produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Unaccustomed Earth marks another screen adaptation of Lahiri’s work, following the success of The Namesake in 2006, which starred Kal Penn, Tabu, and the late Irrfan Khan, and was directed by Mira Nair.
