NEW DELHI– Leaders of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday hailed U.S. President Donald Trump’s praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his announcement on resuming trade talks with New Delhi, calling it a moment of national pride.

BJP MLA Ram Kadam said Trump’s remarks underscored India’s growing stature under Modi’s leadership. “The entire world has recognized Prime Minister Modi as a great leader, as we have seen over the past eleven years,” Kadam told reporters. “A week ago, the U.S. President called PM Modi great, and now he is calling our country great. This is a matter of pride for India’s 1.4 billion citizens.”

Bihar Minister Jibesh Mishra echoed those sentiments, saying Modi’s popularity on the global stage reflected his principles and integrity. “The one whose name is Narendra Modi is the world’s most popular leader. When someone does politics with both principles and integrity, that leader’s name is known across the world, and that name is Narendra Modi,” Mishra said. “As it is often said: the world bows down, it just needs someone to make it bow.”

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, confirmed that the U.S. and India were continuing negotiations to resolve trade barriers. “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks,” he added.

Prime Minister Modi responded on X, emphasizing the broader significance of the dialogue. “India and the U.S. are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-U.S. partnership. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people,” he said.

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) spokesperson Malook Nagar framed the development in policy terms, noting that it pointed to a likely resolution of long-standing tariff disputes. “This clearly indicates that in the coming times, both nations will find a favorable path to resolve tariff issues or other challenges,” Nagar said.

The upbeat reactions follow months of strained trade relations, marked by tariff disagreements and stalled talks. Trump’s conciliatory tone and Modi’s optimistic response signal a potential reset as both governments move to strengthen one of the world’s most consequential economic partnerships. (Source: IANS)
