Benny Dayal Joins Tamil Idol Judging Panel Alongside A.R. Rahman, Andrea Jeremiah and Karthik

MUMBAI — Playback singer Benny Dayal is set to join the judging panel of the upcoming singing competition Tamil Idol, saying he hopes to discover contestants who bring originality, creativity and their own musical identities to the stage.

Dayal will serve as a judge alongside actor and singer Andrea Jeremiah and playback singer Karthik, while Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman will appear as the show’s super judge.

The singer said his approach to evaluating contestants would focus on both technical ability and artistic individuality, emphasizing that performers should be encouraged to develop their own styles.

“I’ve never liked being boxed into one style of music. From playback singing to performing with Funktuation, I’ve always enjoyed experimenting, unlearning and discovering something new. For me, a singer’s individuality is just as important as their technique, and that’s what I’ll be looking for on ‘Tamil Idol’. I’m excited to hear how these young singers interpret music in their own way, take risks and bring their personalities into their performances,” Dayal said.

Known for his energetic performances and versatility across Indian film music and independent projects, Dayal said his own career has been shaped by a willingness to experiment with different musical genres.

He believes that aspiring singers should embrace opportunities to explore new sounds while developing their technical skills.

Dayal also expressed enthusiasm about working with Rahman, whose compositions have played an important role in his musical career.

The singer said he considers collaboration with other artists an opportunity for continued learning and creative growth.

“So, I’m looking forward to this journey, especially alongside A.R. Rahman Sir, whose music has been such an important part of my own journey,” he added.

The upcoming competition brings together several prominent figures from the Tamil music and entertainment industries.

Rahman, one of India’s most internationally recognized composers, will take on the role of super judge, while Jeremiah, Karthik and Dayal will evaluate contestants throughout the competition.

Produced by Fremantle India, Tamil Idol is the Tamil-language edition of the internationally established Idol singing competition franchise.

The show is designed to provide aspiring singers with a platform to showcase their vocal abilities, creativity and performance skills before an audience and a panel of experienced musicians.

Vikkals Vikram and Pooja Venkat will jointly host the program, guiding viewers through the performances and competition.

The series is scheduled to premiere Saturday and Sunday on Sony VIZHA, with episodes also available for streaming on SonyLIV.

For Dayal, the judging role represents another chapter in a career that has included film playback singing, live performances and musical experimentation.

He said the opportunity to hear emerging talent and exchange ideas with accomplished fellow musicians makes the experience particularly meaningful. (Source: IANS)
