WORCESTER, MA–Becker College of Worcester, MA, has become the first educational institution in the United States to establish the officially endorsed Yunus Social Business Centre, named after Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh. Professor Yunus will be the featured speaker at Becker College’s Presidential Speaker Series on Tuesday, April 5, at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.
In an exclusive video interview, Becker College President Robert Johnson talks about the college, Yunus Social Business Centre, his college’s global vision and the visit of Prof. Yunus, who is scheduled to speak on micro finance and social economy.
“Dr. Muhammad Yunus is a distinguished leader who has effected positive change, transforming lives and communities on a global scale. It is an honor and a privilege to welcome Dr. Yunus to Massachusetts for the Becker College Presidential Speaker Series, so our students, community leaders, and the public can hear first-hand about his vision,” Johnson had said earlier.
He said the vision for the Yunus Social Business Centre at Becker College is to be a national model in empowering individuals to identify world problems and create self-sustaining business solutions, while creating jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities that spur economic development.
The Yunus Social Business Centre at Becker College will be housed in Becker’s new Colleen C. Barrett Center for Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Nobel Laureate Yunus pioneered the concept of social business, utilizing micro-finance to help develop self-sustainable businesses. He established the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh in 1983, fueled by the belief that credit is a fundamental human right.
Professor Yunus has been recognized with more than 100 awards from 26 countries, including the Nobel Peace Prize, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal.
