Indian American Population Surpasses 5.4 Million, New U.S. Census Data Shows

WASHINGTON–The Indian American population in the United States has surpassed 5.4 million, increasing by more than 315,000 in a single year, according to newly released estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS).

The 2025 ACS one-year estimates show that approximately 5.41 million Americans identified as Asian Indian alone, compared with 5.09 million in 2024. The latest estimate carries a margin of error of approximately 77,000.

When individuals identifying as Asian Indian alone or in combination with other racial or ethnic groups are included, the population rises to approximately 5.91 million, up from 5.56 million the previous year.

The figures highlight the continued growth of the Indian American community, which has emerged as one of the largest Asian population groups in the United States.

According to the Census Bureau, Asian Indians now represent the largest single Asian population group when counting individuals who identify with only one Asian group, surpassing Chinese Americans, excluding Taiwanese, whose population stood at approximately 4.65 million.

When individuals identifying with multiple groups are included, the Chinese population, excluding Taiwanese, totaled approximately 5.97 million, slightly higher than the Asian Indian population of 5.91 million.

The overall U.S. population reached approximately 341.8 million in 2025, according to the survey.

The data also showed that India remained the second-largest country of birth among foreign-born U.S. residents, behind Mexico.

Approximately 3.40 million U.S. residents were born in India, an increase from 3.16 million in 2024.

Mexico continued to account for the largest foreign-born population, with approximately 10.61 million residents.

India was followed by China, excluding Hong Kong and Taiwan, with approximately 2.40 million immigrants, and the Philippines, with approximately 2.24 million.

The total foreign-born population in the United States reached approximately 50.41 million in 2025.

California remained home to the largest Asian Indian population in the country, followed by Texas and New Jersey.

According to the Census Bureau, California had approximately 1.02 million Asian Indian residents, followed by Texas with 708,000 and New Jersey with 471,000.

New York ranked fourth with approximately 420,000 Asian Indian residents, followed by Illinois with 288,000 and Florida with 239,000.

Beyond demographic changes, the ACS reported an increase in median household income nationwide.

The national median household income reached $84,780 in 2025, compared with $81,604 in 2024.

The American Community Survey is one of the federal government’s primary sources of demographic and economic information, covering more than 40 topics, including education, employment, commuting, language, poverty, income and health insurance.

The one-year estimates provide data for geographic areas with populations of at least 65,000.

The Census Bureau said release dates for additional 2025 ACS datasets will be announced in the coming months as the agency completes required methodological changes.

The latest population figures reflect the continued expansion of the Indian American community, with particularly large populations concentrated in California, Texas, New Jersey, New York, Illinois and Florida. (Source: IANS)
