Modi, Canadian Foreign Minister Discuss Strengthening Trade, Security and Strategic Ties

NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Wednesday to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, security, energy, education and people-to-people exchanges.

The meeting highlighted efforts by both countries to strengthen their strategic partnership and deepen economic and diplomatic engagement.

“Pleased to meet Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. We had a productive discussion on further strengthening India-Canada ties in trade, technology, security, energy, education and people-to-people exchanges. India is committed to building a constructive and forward-looking strategic partnership with Canada that delivers tangible benefits to the people of both countries,” Modi wrote on X.

Earlier Wednesday, Anand met with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to review progress in trade, investment, defense, energy, education and other areas of bilateral cooperation. The two ministers also exchanged views on regional and global developments.

“Guided by our leadership and sustained engagement across government and industry, we are advancing our Strategic Partnership,” Jaishankar wrote on X following their meeting.

Anand pointed to progress made since her visit to New Delhi in 2025, when the two countries agreed to establish a joint roadmap for strengthening relations.

“Exactly one year ago in New Delhi, I met with my Indian counterpart S Jaishankar to establish a Joint Roadmap for Canada–India relations. Returning today, I am encouraged by how far we have come — from advancing trade negotiations to expanding cooperation on energy, innovation and security,” Anand wrote on X.

She emphasized the importance of closer cooperation between the two countries amid changes in the global political and economic landscape.

“The significance of this relationship lies in what our two countries can achieve together. At a time when the international order is undergoing profound change, closer engagement between Canada and India offers an opportunity to shape our future prosperity and contribute to a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” she added.

Anand arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday for her third visit to India since June 2025.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the visit, saying it would provide an opportunity to build on recent diplomatic progress and further strengthen the bilateral partnership. (Source: IANS)
