US Envoy Sergio Gor Meets Bhutan’s King, Discusses Expanding Investment and Cooperation

Thimphu — U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor met Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on Thursday to discuss expanding cooperation in investment, innovation and other areas of mutual interest.
The meeting focused on opportunities to strengthen ties between the United States and Bhutan, including potential collaboration surrounding Bhutan’s ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City development project.
“It was an honour to call on His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to discuss expanding opportunities for investment, innovation, and cooperation. Bhutan’s ambitious vision for its future, including Gelephu Mindfulness City, continues to open new possibilities for deeper engagement with the United States,” Gor wrote on X.
During his official visit, Gor also met Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, with discussions centered on promoting regional stability and economic prosperity.
“Great to be back in the Kingdom of Bhutan. One of the most beautiful places on earth! Always good to see my friend, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. I appreciated his warm welcome and our substantive conversation on advancing stability, and prosperity in the region,” Gor wrote.
The latest discussions follow a meeting between Gor and Tobgay in March, when the two officials explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation across areas of shared interest.
At the time, Tobgay welcomed Gor, who also serves as U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, and emphasized the potential for closer engagement between the two countries.
Although Washington and Thimphu have not established formal diplomatic relations, they maintain friendly ties through the U.S. Embassy in India and Bhutan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
The United States also supports educational and cultural exchanges with Bhutan through initiatives such as the Fulbright Program, Humphrey Fellowship Program and International Visitor Leadership Program, which bring Bhutanese participants to the United States each year. (Source: IANS)
