West Indies Post Record 405/7 Against India as Jangoo, Hope and Campbell Hit Centuries
Guwahati — Centuries from Amir Jangoo, Shai Hope and John Campbell powered the West Indies to 405/7 against India in the second ODI at the ACA Stadium on Wednesday, their highest total in the format.
The West Indies surpassed their previous ODI best of 389 against England in St. George’s in 2019 and crossed the 400-run mark for the first time.
Campbell set the tone with an aggressive 101 off 68 balls, hitting nine fours and five sixes. He dominated India’s attack in the powerplay and reached his half-century in 29 balls, the fastest by a West Indies batter against India in ODIs.
Campbell went on to complete his century in 65 balls, the second-fastest ODI hundred by a West Indies batter, before being dismissed for 101 after top-edging a pull off Gurnoor Brar to deep square leg.
West Indies captain Shai Hope then continued the momentum, despite being dropped twice early in his innings.
Hope was put down on 15 by Kuldeep Yadav off his own bowling and again on 27 by Virat Kohli at midwicket.
He reached his half-century in 53 balls and completed his fourth ODI hundred against India in 89 deliveries. Hope eventually fell for 104 off 94 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.
Jangoo provided the late acceleration, turning 59 off 54 balls into a century off just 70 deliveries.
He finished with 114 from 77 balls, hitting 13 fours and three sixes.
The three centuries marked only the sixth instance in ODI history in which three batters from the same team scored hundreds in a single innings.
India’s bowlers struggled to contain the West Indies throughout the innings.
Prasidh Krishna began with a maiden, but Campbell quickly changed the momentum. ODI debutant Auqib Nabi conceded 17 runs in his second over, while Krishna gave up 22 runs in the seventh as the West Indies raced to 50 in 6.1 overs.
Keacy Carty was dismissed for nine in the fifth over after Naman Dhir took a diving catch at cover point off Krishna.
The West Indies finished the powerplay at 96/1 before Campbell and Hope continued to pile on the runs.
Sherfane Rutherford was dismissed for a first-ball duck, while Jangoo eventually fell after cutting Ravindra Jadeja to Ruturaj Gaikwad at backward point.
Kuldeep dismissed Keemo Paul at long-on to claim his 200th ODI wicket in his 123rd match. Among Indian bowlers, only Mohammed Shami reached the milestone faster, doing so in 104 games.
Jadeja later removed Alzarri Joseph, but Roston Chase and Shamar Joseph helped the West Indies finish strongly.
Chase remained unbeaten on 29 off 25 balls, while Shamar Joseph made 14 not out from eight deliveries.
India’s attack endured a difficult outing, with Nabi conceding 84 runs — the most by an Indian bowler on ODI debut, surpassing Karsan Ghavri’s 83 against England at Lord’s in 1975.
Brar, Jadeja and Kuldeep took two wickets each, but all proved expensive.
Dhir, who bowled six overs, also twisted his left ankle and left the field.
