Shaan Says He Once Wanted a Career in Advertising or Journalism

Mumbai — Playback singer Shaan has revealed that he once wanted to pursue a career in advertising or journalism and initially considered himself the weakest musical link in his family.

Speaking on film trade analyst Komal Nahta’s podcast “Game Changers: The Music Series,” Shaan reflected on growing up in a family deeply connected to music.

“I was the weakest link to music in my family,” Shaan said. “My father was a composer and a very good singer. My grandfather, mother and sister were also good singers, so I honestly felt I was the weakest link when it came to music in my family.”

Shaan, who went on to become one of Bollywood’s best-known playback singers, said music came naturally to him even though he did not receive formal training.

“Growing up, I had the rebel in me. I wanted to do journalism and advertising, so my mind was diverted towards those interests,” he said. “Singing came naturally to me, I didn’t train for it. People feel it’s genetic, but I feel it’s conditioning.”

He said he initially turned down several opportunities to sing professionally before eventually deciding to give music a chance.

“I used to get opportunities, living in Mumbai and having singer-parents, but I rejected them. Then, I finally gave in,” Shaan said.

He added that his mother worked as a chorus singer and his father had several colleagues in the music industry, which helped open doors for him and his family at an early age.

“They got to know that we could sing, and that’s how we got the opportunity to sing in jingles at a very young age,” he said. (Source: IANS)
