Suspect Arrested in $120,000 Theft From Lopamudra Raut’s Mumbai Apartment

Mumbai — Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the theft of valuables worth more than Rs 1 crore from actress and model Lopamudra Raut’s apartment in Mumbai’s Santacruz neighborhood.
Santacruz Police identified the suspect as Chandan Mukhiya, a resident of Goth Mitti village in Bihar’s Darbhanga district. He was arrested in Bihar with assistance from local police.
Investigators said valuables worth about Rs 51 lakh have been recovered, including a luxury watch, two gold bars and cash. Police are continuing efforts to recover the remaining stolen property.
According to investigators, Mukhiya allegedly surveyed Raut’s apartment building before the burglary to determine when the residence would be empty. Police said he then used a bamboo pole to reach the fifth-floor balcony and gained entry to the apartment before breaking into the bedroom and taking the valuables.
Police said the suspect had allegedly been scouting locked homes across Mumbai and, after committing thefts, would sometimes travel back to Bihar by train the same day.
Investigators used mobile phone records and location data to trace Mukhiya to Darbhanga. A Mumbai police team subsequently traveled to Bihar and, working with Darbhanga police, conducted a raid in an area under the jurisdiction of Sonki police station.
Authorities said they are investigating whether anyone else was involved in the burglary and are working to locate the remaining valuables.
Police also suspect Mukhiya may have used part of the stolen money to purchase about two gunthas of land in his sister’s name.
Raut, a model and actress, gained national recognition as a contestant on the reality television show “Bigg Boss 10.” (Source: IANS)
