Farhan Akhtar Marks 25 Years of ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ With Tribute to Film’s Enduring Legacy
Mumbai — Filmmaker, actor and singer Farhan Akhtar celebrated the 25th anniversary of his directorial debut, “Dil Chahta Hai,” reflecting on the film’s enduring popularity and its trio of central characters.
Akhtar shared a poster from the film on social media with the message, “Celebrating 25 years of laughter, friendship and unforgettable memories.”
“Can’t believe it’s been 25 years.. Akash, Sameer and Sid don’t look like they’ve aged a day!!!! Heart filled with gratitude to you, the audience, for keeping it alive and still relevant. Big hug,” he wrote.
Released in 2001, “Dil Chahta Hai” stars Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna as Akash, Sameer and Sid, three close friends whose relationships and priorities begin to change as they move into adulthood.
The cast also includes Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia.
The coming-of-age comedy-drama follows the friends as they navigate romance, friendship, separation and self-discovery. Set against an urban Indian backdrop, the film became known for its contemporary depiction of young adults and their relationships.
Akhtar developed the screenplay partly from personal diaries documenting his travel experiences, with creative associate Kassim Jagmagia also contributing to the story. The movie was filmed in India and Australia.
“Dil Chahta Hai” went on to achieve cult status and is widely credited with helping reshape the portrayal of friendship and urban youth in mainstream Hindi cinema.
The film launched Akhtar’s career as a director. He later directed movies including “Lakshya” and “Don.”
Akhtar made his acting debut in the 2008 film “Rock On!!” and subsequently appeared in movies including “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag,” “Dil Dhadakne Do,” “Wazir,” “Luck By Chance,” “The Sky Is Pink” and “Toofaan.”
In July, Akhtar also marked the fifth anniversary of “Toofaan,” the sports drama in which he played boxer Aziz Ali. The film also stars Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal, Supriya Pathak, Hussain Dalal and Vijay Raaz. (Source: IANS)
