Indian-Origin Rideshare Driver Charged With Sexual Assault in Canada

Ottawa–An Indian-origin rideshare driver has been charged with two counts of sexual assault following an alleged attack on a woman at a public parking facility in Burlington, Ontario.

Halton Regional Police said Mandeep Singh, 25, of Etobicoke, approached the woman at the Burlington GO Station parking lot at about 5:15 p.m. on June 16 and began speaking with her before allegedly sexually assaulting her.

The woman fled to a nearby business, but the suspect followed her and allegedly assaulted her a second time, according to a report by Khalsa Vox. She escaped without reported physical injuries.

Singh, who worked as an Uber driver, was arrested on July 26 and held for a bail hearing in Milton. Police released his photograph because investigators believe there may be additional victims and asked anyone with information to come forward.

Unverified social media posts have claimed that Singh was connected to Khalistani extremist groups and described him as a prominent political figure. Canadian authorities, however, have not confirmed any such affiliations.

The report said official police statements and mainstream Canadian coverage have identified Singh only as a rideshare driver facing criminal charges. It cautioned that emphasizing unverified political or religious links could distract from the alleged offenses and the victim.

The case has also raised questions about safety procedures used by rideshare companies, including driver screening, complaint handling and real-time accountability.

More than a month passed between the alleged assaults and Singh’s arrest, prompting concerns about whether complaints involving public safety are being investigated quickly enough.

The report said the case should not be used to broadly blame immigrant or ethnic communities. It called for the focus to remain on protecting potential victims, conducting a thorough investigation, ensuring an impartial prosecution and determining whether rideshare platforms have adequate safeguards to prevent abuse.
