MUMBAI– Music composer Daboo Malik has spoken candidly about his son, singer-composer Amaal Mallik’s battle with depression, stressing the importance of personal accountability and emotional healing rather than placing blame on others.
In an interview with IANS, Daboo reflected on the emotional challenges artists face, especially when their aspirations remain unfulfilled. “Artists experience a unique loneliness. When they don’t achieve what they aspire to, it leads to emotional voids. I’ve been through it too. But blaming others doesn’t help,” he said. “If you’re hurt, acknowledge it. Talk to someone—your doctor, your family, your friends. But don’t point fingers. Life is a battle you have to fight with dignity.”
He also spoke about the evolving role of social media, especially in light of artists like Amaal and actress Tanushree Dutta publicly discussing their mental health journeys. “Social media has shaped an entire generation,” Daboo noted. “We’ve seen people like Amaal and Tanushree come out of depression and find themselves again.”
Earlier this year in March, Amaal Mallik publicly revealed his clinical depression diagnosis and shared deeply personal grievances involving his family. In a series of emotionally charged social media posts, Amaal blamed his parents, Daboo and Jyoti Malik, for contributing to his estrangement from his younger brother, singer Armaan Malik.
“I’ve reached a point where I can no longer keep silent about the pain I’ve endured,” Amaal wrote. “For years, I’ve been made to feel like I am less, despite spending days and nights toiling away to make a safe life for people. I have spent my blood, sweat, and tears to create each of the 126 melodies that have released over the last decade.”
Amaal went on to declare that he would be severing personal ties with his family, stating, “From now on, my interactions with my family will be strictly professional. This isn’t a decision made in anger, but one born from the necessity to heal and reclaim my life.”
While the emotional fallout within the Malik family remains raw, Daboo’s latest comments appear aimed at fostering a broader conversation about emotional resilience, healing, and self-reflection in the face of personal turmoil. (Source: IANS)
