Srividya Kalyanaraman: Reporting on Technology and Entrepreneurship in Boston

BOSTON–At 21, Srividya Kalyanaraman was the first reporter to cover social media and the internet for India’s oldest financial daily, The Economic Times, according to her Linkedin profile.

“I was an enthusiastic second member of freshly-minted two-person business desk at Firstpost.com, India’s first digital-only newsroom and in 2014, a summer intern on Money Magazine’s inaugural web team that launched Money.com, following the Time Inc/Time Warner split,” she says.

Today, Ms. Kalyanaraman serves as the editor of BostInno, which since 2008 has been covering and connecting the Boston ecosystem, producing digital media and events about the entrepreneurs, executives, startups, businesses, trends and topics that are the shaping the present and future of the city’s economy.

Ms. Kalyanaraman is author of In the Know, BostInno’s daily morning newsletter. Here is a Q/A with Ms. Kalyanaraman.

INDIA New England News: Please tell our readers about your work and what you enjoy most about it?

Srividya Kalyanaraman: I’m an editor at BostInno. We pride ourselves of being the one stop shop for all local innovation news. The part I enjoy most about my job is the exposure it gives me to all the creative and brilliant minds in Boston.

INE: To what charitable, community and professional groups do you belong and why?

SK: I’m a part of SAJA (South Asian Journalist Association) and Online News Association.

INE: What are your hobbies and interests?

SK:  I love gardening, listening to and supporting music and reading.

INE: In what way you feel you have most positively influenced or served the local community or your company/organization and professional field?

SK: At my job, I strive hard to make sure underrepresented voices are heard and represented. I feel proud to work toward that cause in my daily life.

INE: What is the most pressing issue that you believe women are facing today?

SK: Immense social and professional pressure and pay inequity.

INE: What is your rare talent that people don’t know about?

SK: I am very good at remembering dates and storing random trivia in hidden corners of my brain.

INE: What are your favorite books?

SK: More recently – The Undoing Project, Between the World and Me, Being Mortal are some.

INE: What are your favorite quotes that motivate you or make you smile?

SK: “When you are a pessimist and the bad thing happens, you live it twice.”

INE: Who inspires you the most?

SK: The women in my family and life.

INE: Who is the one person you would like to meet and why?

SK: Bill Watterson for making Calvin and Hobbes.

INE: What are your core values that you try to live by?

SK: Gratitude, patience, contentment and seeking peace.
