CAMBRIDGE, MA—Laxmidhar Behera, a professor of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, will give a talk on “Building a Conscious Machine: Challenges and Future Perspectives” on Monday, Oct. 15, at 5:30 pm at MIT in Cambridge, MA.

The talk will be based on his research in Artificial Intelligence.  Prof. Behera has been at the forefront in this area for over two decades.

Among many topics related to AI, he will focus on: Can we build conscious machines that will be as natural as living beings?

Prof. Behera will contrast ‘weak AI’ (in applications like Alexa and Siri) with ‘strong AI’ – which has strong ties with consciousness. He will demonstrate the latest advances in AI, and discuss basic building blocks of a conscious being, namely sense experience, mind, intelligence and self-awareness, leading up to a great leap in the basic foundation of scientific concepts with active semantic space.

Prof. Behera is working as Poonam and Prabhu Goel Chair Professor at IIT Kanpur. He has research and teaching experience of more than 23 years. After receiving his PhD from IIT Delhi in 1996, he pursued postdoctoral studies in the German National Research Center for Information Technology, Sank Augustin, Germany.

He has also had stints as visiting professor in universities in UK, Germany, Switzerland and China. He is a pioneer in the field of AI based autonomous robotics. His research interests lie in the convergence of machine learning, control theory, robotic vision and heterogeneous robotic platforms.

The event will be held at 6-120, MIT (https://whereis.mit.edu/?go=6)
