WALTHAM, MA- As Indians struggle with the global diabetes epidemic, three experts will talk about the diabetes epidemic and its prevention at North America’s largest South Asian Health Expo on March 5th at Burlington Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA.

The speakers at the diabetes panel are: Dr. Om Ganda, MD, Medical Director of the Lipid Clinic, and Chair of the Clinical Oversight Committee at Joslin Diabetes Center; Dr. Samir Malkani, MD, endocrinologist and diabetologist at UMass Memorial Health Care; and Dr. Neelima Singh, MD, a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.

The 5th Annual Health, Fitness & Wellness Expo is on March 5th, 2017 from 10: 00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA. The event is free to all attendees but they must pre-register. The Indian population has long struggled with the prevalence of diabetes, with the rate of prevalence spiking in 2015 at 8.7 percent of the population afflicted (per the World Health Organization’s 2015 report). With a push for more direct policy and action, the rate has gone down to 7.8% in the year 2016, deviating from the global upward trend.

Speakers at the diabetes panel:

Dr. Om Ganda

Dr. Om Ganda, MD

Dr. Ganda is Medical Director of the Lipid Clinic, and Chair of the Clinical Oversight Committee at Joslin Diabetes Center. His special interests include Lipid Disorders, Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction. In addition, he is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Ganda also conducts clinical trials examining the relationship between type 1 and type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He graduated from S.M.S. Medical College in India in 1966 and did his residency at All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Samir Malkani, MD

Dr. Malkani is a board-certified endocrinologist and diabetologist at UMass Memorial Health Care, the clinical partner of UMass Medical School, where he sees over 2,000 patient visits for diabetes annually. He has an interest in clinical trials pertaining to the management of diabetes and its complications, and has been the Principal Investigator in many of these trials.

He has participated in cardiovascular outcomes trials, drug trials for managing diabetes and its complications, and trials related to the use of technology in diabetes.

Dr. Neelima Singh, MD

Dr. Singh is a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, diabetes and Metabolism. She has been practicing Endocrinology at NSPG, Lynn, affiliated with North Shore Medical Center, since 2009. She received her medical training at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi, India, graduating in 2000.  She completed her residency in internal medicine at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Worcester in 2007.

Dr. Singh received a medical fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Wayne State University in 2009. She specializes in caring for patients with diabetes, osteoporosis and thyroid disorders.
