SHREWSBURY, MA—Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan on sitar and Amit Kavthekar on tabla will perform in a concert in the memory of renowned tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha on Friday, April 29, in Shrewsbury, MA.
The evening musical program is organized by Shadaj and SPK Academy. It is a unique event featuring music appreciation session followed by the concert. The first half of the program is in conversation with Ustad Parvez Khan and the second part is the concert.
Ustad Parvez Khan is ranked as one of the best sitar players in the world today. Born in Mumbai, a young Ustad Parvez Khan was initiated into the rich musical heritage by his renowned father and guru, Ustad Aziz Khan, a famous musician and noted composer. His father taught him vocal music and tabla before training him on sitar.
Kavthekar, disciple of late Ustad Alla Rakha and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, is a child prodigy and started to learn tabla at the age of 6 from Ustad Alla Rakha. Since 1991, he was fortunate to be taught tabla intricacies by tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. He has played tabla with many legends such as Zakir Hussain and Sivamani on Zee Tv in India, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma in his Documentary directed by Jabbar Patel in India. He has accompaniment Pandit Jasraj, and Ustad Shahid Parvez, among others. Currently, Kavthekar teaches tabla at American School of Mumbai and Boston-based New England School of Music.
